Nursing home rated ‘weak’ for COVID support and infection control

An Ayrshire nursing home has been rated ‘weak’ for its care and support and infection control practices during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Glenfairn House, which is run by Sanctuary Care, was also rated ‘adequate’ for supporting people’s health and well-being, and staffing by the Care Inspectorate following an inspection completed on 12 March.

The report said: “On our first visit, we had significant concerns about the use and availability of PPE, the management of laundry and the standards of cleanliness throughout the home, including care equipment.

“As a result of the concerns identified, we issued the service with a letter of serious concern detailing where immediate improvements were required by Tuesday, 9 March 2021.”

The Care Inspectorate said staff failed to change PPE between tasks and hand hygiene was not carried out on removal of PPE.

It also highlighted limited clinical waste bins for PPE disposal and only one PPE station on each corridor.

Cleanliness of equipment and furnishing was “poor” with mattresses and lounge chairs “heavily contaminated”.

The report added that progress had been made on follow up inspections on 10 and 11 March, however, with clean laundry now stored more appropriately and PPE stations and clinical waste bins put in place.

While the general environment was “cleaner” with cleaning schedules being developed, the regulator said cleanliness of care equipment continued to be an area of concern.

Sheila O’Connor, Director of Operations – Sanctuary Care, said: “We immediately addressed the points raised following the inspection and will continue to ensure the required amount of PPE is available for staff to use.

“Given the unprecedented challenges posed by the pandemic, it is pleasing to read that residents are happy with the care they receive and see comments in the report praising our staff. We can reassure the families of our residents that we remain focussed on providing their loved ones with the care they deserve – care that is based on their individual needs, with their well-being and happiness at the centre of everything we do.”
